Samenvatting

Born into a farming family in Punjab, Baldev Singh Dhillon rose to become one of India’s foremost agricultural scientists, renowned for his pioneering research in maize. His contributions led to the development of maize cultivars (including first single-cross hybrid) and technology for cultivation during winter/spring season, which significantly enhanced productivity and benefited farmers. He also developed plant breeding methods and mating designs.
Beyond distinguished scientific career, Dhillon provided exemplary leadership as Vice Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, for a decade. His tenure strengthened the institution through strategic vision and academic development. He also held key national positions, namely Additional Director General of ICAR and Director of National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi. In recognition of his achievements, he received the Padma Shri and was elected Fellow of India’s leading science academies. This volume traces Dhillon’s journey from rural Punjab to national prominence, highlighting his scientific accomplishments, commitment to farmers’ welfare, and efforts to communicate science through writings in different languages.
